Lesser Ground-Cuckoo has a wide geographic range, its population is very large, and its population trend is believed to be stable (BirdLife International 2013). Consequently its IUCN Red List status is assessed as Least Concern (BirdLife International 2013). Under Mexican low, Lesser Ground-Cuckoo also is not classified as threatened.
Effects of human activity on populations
No threats to Lesser Ground-Cuckoo are identified by BirdLife International (2013); indeed, the population of this species may be expanding due to ongoing habitat degradation (Dickey and van Rossem 1938, BirdLife International 2013).
