Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

Lesser Roadrunner is resident in northern Central America, from western Mexico south to northwestern Nicaragua. This roadrunner primarily occurs on the Pacific slope, from southern Sonora, Mexico south through Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras to northwestern Nicaragua (Dickey and van Rossem 1938, Friedmann et al. 1950, Monroe 1968, Land 1970, Howell and Webb 1995, Martínez-Sánchez and Will 2010). It also occurs in interior drainages in southern Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras. A disjunct population occurs in the northwestern portion of the Yucatan Peninsula (Friedmann et al. 1950, Paynter 1955, Howell and Webb 1995).

The elevational range of Lesser Roadrunner is from sea level up to 3000 m (Howell and Webb 1995).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to the Americas.

Habitat

Lesser Roadrunner inhabits arid to semiarid scrub, brushy woodland, openings in deciduous woodland, and locally occurs in pine-oak forest (Paynter 1955, Schaldach 1963, Binford 1989, Howell and Webb 1995).
