Breeding

Introduction

Lesser Violetear breeds from October-March in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989), and March-August in Colombia (Hilty and Brown 1986).

The nest of Lesser Violetear is "a fairly substantial cup", and is composed of treefern scales, plant down, dry grass blades, and mosses, and is bound together with cobwebs (Skutch 1967, Stiles and Skutch 1989). Nests are placed 1-3 m, on a downward drooping twig, rootlet, or bamboo stem at the edge of forest or along a stream, or hanging from a bank (Skutch 1967, Stiles and Skutch 1989). The clutch is two; the eggs are white and unmarked (Skutch 1987). Only the female builds the nest, incubates, and provisions the young. Incubation lasts 16 days (Skutch 1967).
