Introduction

Most of the information provided in this species description results from studies of the Lilac-crowned Parrot in the Reserva de la Biosfera Chamela-Cuixmala on the coast of Jalisco, Mexico. This work would not have been possible without the logistical and financial support of the Fundación Ecológica de Cuixmala in Mexico, the Denver Zoological Foundation, and the World Parrot Trust. The Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales in Mexico granted permits for the research. Many students and colleagues assisted with field work or contributed ideas including A. Salinas-Melgoza, N.F.R. Snyder, A. Miranda, B.J. Miller, R. Núñez, T.C. Sánchez-Martínez, A. Gutiérrez-Pérez, L. Morales-Pérez, E.I. Villaseñor-Sánchez, and D. Valenzuela.
