Systematics

Geographic Variation

Forshaw (1989) reports a poorly differentiated race of the Lilac-crowned Parrot confined to the northern part of the species’ range, south to central eastern Sinaloa and Durango. This race is termed Amazona finschi woodi, and is considered to present less yellow in the green plumage, with a narrower and somewhat duller maroon on the forehead. However, most species accounts regard the Lilac-crowned Parrot as monotypic (Collar 1997, Dickinson 2003). Added to which, Collar (1997) states: “Proposed northern race woodi very poorly differentiated". Furthermore, radio-telemetry studies indicate that Lilac-crowned Parrots make large-scale, extensive movements (Salinas-Melgoza and Renton 2007), facilitating interaction between widely dispersed populations, thereby reducing the likelihood of formation of a distinct subspecies.
