Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Long-tailed Manakins are distributed along the western coasts of southern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, and northern Costa Rica (McDonald 1989b, Trainer and Parsons 2001, McDonald 2003). This species occurs in the lowlands, up to 1500 m (Stiles and Skutch 1989, Howell and Webb 1995). The range is west of the continental divide, unbroken by rivers and mountains. The Long-tailed Manakin is resident throughout its range, although both sexes appear to disperse widely (McDonald 2003).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
The Long-tailed Manakin occurs in tropical dry forests, premontane tropical moist forests, and occasionally in montane cloud forests (Foster 1976, McDonald 1989b, Trainer and Parsons 2001). It prefers forests with plentiful ground vegetation, such as along mangrove swamps (Slud 1957, Snow 2004), and is generally found between altitudes below 1500 m (Snow 2004).
