Breeding

Introduction

No nest constructed. The eggs of Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture are laid on the ground or in the hollow of a tree (Haverschmidt 1968). Lays 2 creamy white eggs with heavy blotches of brown, gray, and rufous. Incubation period reported as 40 days with nesting period of 70-75 days (Di Giacomo 2005). Egg measurements from Di Giacomo (2005): mean 62.8 x 44.7 mm (range 58.3-65.9 x 43.1-47.4 mm; n = 11); and from Wolfe (1938): 75.5 x 48.5 mm and 74.6 x 48.6 mm. Breeding is reported in April in southern Mexico (Binford 1989) and in February in Suriname (Haverschmidt 1968). Egg laying in Belize is reported in September and October (personal observation).
