Demography and Populations

Introduction

BirdLife International (2014) estimates the total population to number 0.5-4.99 million individuals. This contrasts with Ferguson-Lees et al. (2001) who estimated 100,000 individuals. A census in northern Belize from 15 April- 6 May 1982 documented 61 individuals at 10 locations. The largest flock was 34 observed at Crooked Tree Lagoon (Eitniear 1985, McGehee and Eitniear 1987). Koester (1982) estimated 242-482 Lesser Yellow-headed Vultures migrated through northern Colombia from September until May.
