Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

A vocalization (song?) of Magnificent Hummingbird is a loud or high-pitched, "sharp tchik or tcheep" (Howell and Webb 1995) or chirp or chip, repeated insistently and rapidly. They can be very vocal when their territory is threatened.

For a representative audio recording with sonogram, see audio

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Magnificent Hummingbird can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds

None reported, other than the usual "whirring" sound of the wings in flight, audible (as in most hummingbirds) at close range.
