Priorities for Future Research
Introduction
Surveys are needed to determine the population size, current distribution, and the quality of remaining mangrove habitat. Research should also focus on the ecology and natural history of the Mangrove Hummingbird to understand ecological correlates that determine a healthy breeding population of Mangrove Hummingbirds, as well as dispersal distances to connect disjunct populations. This species currently lacks a conservation plan. Such a plan might be modeled after plans for other endangered hummingbirds, such as the one that Fundación ProAves (with support from the American Bird Conservancy) is developing for the Sapphire-bellied Hummingbird Lepidopyga lilliae, which inhabits mangroves in Colombia.
