Markham's Storm-Petrel Oceanodroma markhami

Version: 1.0 — Published February 8, 2013

Conservation

The IUCN Red List conservation status of Markham's Storm-Petrel is assessed as Data Defficient,, due to a lack of adequate data on overall numbers, population trends, and potential threats (BirdLife International 2013).

Effects of human activity on populations

Colonies of Markham's Storm-Petrel on the Paracas Peninsula are mostly away from human settlement, though some precautions should be made to ensure they are not disturbed.

If these birds do indeed nest underground in mountainous or desert regions, mining is a major potential threat, as a few ill-placed mines could wipe out entire colonies, or be a major source of disturbance.

Offshore threats poorly studied, but commerical fishing may have some affect on this species.
