Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The call of Mexican Sheartail is described as a "fairly hard to slightly liquid, rapid chipping, often slightly rolled" (Howell and Webb 1995).

The male utters "a dry chattering" at the bottom of the courtship dive, and also has "a rapid, dry, buzzy zz-zz-zzt as he flies back and forth in front" of the female during the courtship display (Howell and Webb 1995).

There are very few available audio recordings of vocalizations of Mexican Sheartail.

Nonvocal Sounds

In flight the wings produce a "low, insect-like humming" (Howell and Webb 1995). It also is possible that the sounds produced by the male during the courtship display are not vocal, but are produced by the wings (Howell and Webb 1995).
