Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Moustached Antpitta is resident, locally, in the Andes of Colombia and Ecuador. It occurs on the west slope of the central Andes (Chapman 1912, Renjifo 1999, Renjifo et al. 2002), in the upper Magdalena Valley of Colombia (Hernández and Rodríguez 1979, Renjifo 2002), and on both slopes of the Andes of northern Ecuador, south to Napo and to Cotopaxi (Krabbe and Coopmans 2000, Schulenberg 2002, Greeney and Gelis 2006).
The elevational range of Moustached Antpitta in Colombia is 1800-2135 m (Renjifo 2002) and in Ecuador is 1850-2500 m (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001a). The elevational distribution of Moustached Antpitta is above that of the related, and closely similar, Scaled Antpitta (Grallaria guatimalensis) (Krabbe and Coopmans 2000).
Distribution outside the Americas
Endemic to the Americas.
Habitat
Moustached Antpitta occupies the understory of humid montane forest, especially "in dense undergrowth of wet (mossy), primary forest, mainly in ravines and on steep slopes" (Krabbe and Coopmans 2000).
