Diet and Foraging
Diet
Essentially unknown. There is very little information on the diet under natural conditions. Freile and Renjifo (2003) observed adults provisioning nestlings with arthropods, which were captured on the ground, both on trails through forest and on the forest floor. Greeney and Gelis (2006) also observed a pair of antpittas bringing food to a nest. Most food items could not be identified, but documented prey were earthworms and katydids (Tettigoniddae; 3-5 km long). Moustached Antpitta is one of several species of antpitta that recently has been "domesticated" at a site in northwest Ecuador, where wild birds are fed worms by hand.
