Behavior
Introduction
There is little information on the behavior of Mountain Avocetbill. This species forages low near the ground (1-3 m), and extracts nectar from flowers both while hovering and while clinging to flowers as it feeds (Hilty and Brown 1986). Sometimes pierces the corollas of Centropogon while perched on these flowers (Krabbe, in Ridgely and Greenfield 2001b). Also perches low to the ground, and in general behavior is "sluggish" compared to other sympatric species of hummingbird (Hilty and Brown 1986). Forages for small insects by sallying (Schuchmann 1999).
Territoriality
There is no information on territorial behavior or on home range size for Mountain Avocetbill.
Sexual Behavior
Undescribed. Mountain Avocetbill presumably is polygynous, as are most if not all species of hummingbirds (Schuchmann 1999: 509).
Social and interspecific behavior
Mountain Avocetbill is solitary (Hilty and Brown 1986).
Predation
