Sounds and Vocal Behavior
Vocalizations
The song is described as "a low, dove-like prrr-doo, repeated several times in succession" (Cleere 1998) or as "a low stuttering trill dur'di'du'du ..., slow and irreg. [irregular] in tempo" (Hilty 2003). Often sings from the ground (Belton 1984, Hilty 2003). The call is "a series of short whup notes given in flight? and also when flushed or alighting" (Cleere 1998), or "a low chuck" when flushed (Hilty 2003). Usually does not vocalize when foraging (Hilty 2003). An alarm call is "a musical cherk-cherk" (Cleere 1998).
