Subspecies

Related Species

Described as Scytalopus panamensis vicinior Zimmer 1939; type locality Ricuarte, Nariño, Colombia

This taxon continued to be classified as a subspecies of Scytalopus panamensis (Tacarcuna Tapaculo) by subsequent authors (e.g. Peters 1951, Meyer de Schauensee 1966, Hilty and Brown 1986), until Krabbe and Schulenberg (1997) pointed out that there is "no particular similarity, either in plumage or in voice, between true S. vicinior and S. panamensis", and recommended that these be recognized as separate species. Before vicinior was known in life, it also was confused with a morphologically similar taxon that is limited to lower elevations, which was described by Krabbe and Schulenberg (1997) as Scytalopus chocoensis (Choco Tapaculo).
