Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The voice of Northern Emerald-Toucanet is described as "low, frog-like notes, repeated steadily, rronk- rronk- rronk or wup-wup-wup ... often with more emphatic notes thrown in to break up an otherwise monotonous repetition" (Mexico; Howell and Webb 1995), and as "a loud, far-carrying, dry rrip rrrip rrip rrip or curré curré curré ... often continued for minutes on end" (Costa Rica; Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Other vocalizations include "a soft eeaaah" among members of a flock, a "sharp, staccato, creaking rattle" and "various croaking or barking notes" (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

Additional recordings of vocalizations of Northern Emerald-Toucanet can be heard at Macaulay Library and at xeno-canto.

Nonvocal Sounds

The wings may make an audible whirring sound in flight (Howell and Webb 1995).
