Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Oaxaca Sparrow is described as "one, sometimes two, introductory figures [notes] and a trill-like chatter" (Wolf 1977) or as "a single note followed by a varied chipping series at times run into a short warble: swi chi-chi-chi-chi-chi chu-chu-chut, or ssiu chi-chi-chi chi-di-rit, etc." (Howell and Webb 1995).

Calls of Oaxaca Sparrow include "a slightly nasal, dry scolding chatter shasha ... or chehcheh ... suggesting a wren, also a harsh, more excited, often prolonged chattering chii-i-i-i-i-i-ir, accelerating and slowing, and a high, thin tik" (Howell and Webb 1995). Hardy (1980) also describes a chatter call from Oaxaca Sparrow.
