Demography and Populations
Introduction
The number of individuals of Oilbirds per colony greatly varies from a few individuals to thousands depending on size of the cave, suitable ledges and spaces for nests, and the availability of food. The largest colonies are at Parque Nacional Cueva de los Guacharos with 10.000-18.000 estimated individuals. In Venezuela, a total of 54 colonies of different sizes have been reported (Hilty 2003). In Parque Nacional Puracé, there are about 1000 individuals in the same cave (Hilty and Brown 1986). Only one colony has been reported at seacoasts in Sucre, Venezuela (Hilty 2003).
