There are no subspecies and no known geographic patterns of variation in plumage.
Orinoco Goose is the only extant species in the genus Neochen. It is a shelduck in the family Anatidae, and the subfamily Tadorninae. Neochen is the sister genus to Chloephaga, another genus of South American goose (Eo et al. 2009).
