Related Species
Described as Crypturus transfasciatus Sclater and Salvin 1878, with type locality Santa Rosa, Ecuador. Crypturellus rubripes (described as Crypturus rubripes Taczanowski 1886, from Lechugal) was recognized as a separate species by Peters (1931) and Hellmayr and Conover (1942), but Koepcke (1962) showed that rubripes represented the male plumage of transfasciatus.
Monophyly of the genus Crypturellus is well-supported by analyses of both morphological and genetic characters (Bertelli et al 2002, Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004). Parker et al. (1995) noted vocal similarities betwen Crypturellus transfasciatus, Crypturellus cinnamomeus (Thicket Tinamou), and Crypturellus atrocapillus (Black-capped Tinamou). Phylogenetic analysis of both morphological and genetic characters confirms that transfasciatus and cinnamomeus are sister taxa (Bertelli et al 2002, Bertelli and Porzecanski 2004)
