SPECIES

Palmchat Dulus dominicus

Sarah Dzielski
Version: 1.0 — Published November 7, 2014

Conservation

Palmchat is relatively common in the lowlands of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Although the exact population size of the species has not been recorded, the bird is evaluated as a species of Least Concern (BirdLife International 2014).

Effects of human activity on populations

Palmchat is hunted and killed for food by the people of Hispaniola. Despite this, the Palmchat remains a common bird in Hispaniola. These birds manage to flourish in most habitats containing suitable foliage for nesting. Because the birds build their nests at the tops of trees, they are able to nest in relatively populated areas without trouble from the feral cat or human populations below (Dod 1992).
