Distribution
Distribution in the Americas
Palmchat is endemic to the lowlands of Hispaniola in the Greater Antilles. Palmchat is resident and is widespread throughout the island of Hispaniola, including Île de la Gonâve and Isla Saona (Latta et al. 2006). It is reported to as high as 1830 m, although it is rare above 1500 m (Bond 1928, Wetmore and Swales 1931, Latta et al. 2006).

Habitat
Palmchat is common in most lowland habitats on the island of Hispaniola. They prefer areas with Royal Palms, although they occupy "nearly all habitat types", including both decidouous and evergreen forests and second growth woods (Latta et al. 2006), but does not occur in "dense rain forest" (Wetmore and Swales 1931).

Palmchat fossils "of late Pleistocene age" are reported from the Dominican Republic (Bernstein 1965).
