Subspecies

Related Species

Described as Tanagra dominica Linnaeus 1766; type locality Dominica [= Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Hispaniola]

Dulus long has been classified in a monotypic family, but considered to be related to waxwings (Bombycillidae) and silky-flycatchers (Ptiliogonatidae) (e.g. Arvey 1951). This relationship has been confirmed with phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data, from both mitochondrial and nuclear genes (Fleisher et al. 2008, Spellman et al. 2008), placing Dulus in a radiation that also includes waxwings (Bombycillidae), Hawaiian honeyeaters (Mohoidae), silky-flycatchers (Ptiliogonatidae), Hylocitrea bonensis (Hylocitreidae), and Hypocolius ampelinus (Hypocoliidae). Relationships within this radiation are not fully resolved, but Dulus may at or near the base of this assemblage (Spellmann et al 2008).
