Introduction
Between 1966 and 1970, ornithologists John Terborgh and John Weske, with a small team of assistants, mounted an audacious series of expeditions to the crest of the wild and uninhabited Cordillera Vilcabamba, in south central Peru. They were there to study the ecological relationships of bird species with regard to elevation, in pristine habitat. Among the rewards of their hard work was the discovery of several previously undescribed bird species, including the Parodi's Hemispingus. Today Parodi's Hemispingus is known from a few additional localities, and eager birders can drive to see the hemispingus, but not much more is known about it than when Terborgh and Weske first encountered this species.
