Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

There is little information on the vocal repertoire of Patagonian Tinamou. Vocalizations are described generally as "flute-like notes" (Fjeldså and Krabbe 1990), including "a melancholy descending whistle, Pweeeeuuuuuu, lasting nearly 1 s" (Jaramillo 2003), and "a chorus, usually of three birds, comprising melancholy whistles that are variably inflected, pheew ... ptweeew...pheew..." (Jaramillo 2003).

The few available audio recordings of vocalizations of Patagonian Tinamou can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.

Nonvocal Sounds

None reported. The wings probably produce a whistling sound when the bird is flushed, as with other species of tinamou.
