SPECIES

Pearly-breasted Conebill Conirostrum margaritae

Version: 1.0 — Published October 14, 2016

Conservation

The IUCN Red List conservation status of Pearly-breasted Conebill recently was uplisted to Vulnerable (BirdLife International 2016), based on models of future deforestation in the Amazon Basin.

The relative abundance of Pearly-breasted Conebill is assessed as rare (Peru: Schulenberg et al. 2016) or as uncommon and local (range wide: Ridgely and Tudor 2009).

Effects of human activity on populations

River islands are frequently cleared for small farming operations near human habitations, which typically removes forest habitat on the island. However, given the speed at which river islands regenerate due to sediment deposition, the habitat regenerates extremely quickly. Extensive deforestation and damming operations that drastically affect the flow and sediment load of rivers have the potential to severely affect Pearly-breasted Conebill populations.
