Peruvian Antpitta Grallaricula peruviana

Like other Grallaricula, the Peruvian Antpitta is a poorly known inhabitant of Andean forests under intense pressures from human alterations. It is rather strongly patterned for this genus, with a uniformly brown back and distinctive markings on the face and breast.  So far as is known, Peruvian Antpitta is restricted to the undergrowth of mature forests, often near riparian areas.  The Peruvian Antpitta's exact range is uncertain, with spotty records east of the Andes indicating that it lives at elevations between 1800 and 2000 m from northern Ecuador to northern Peru.

Little is known of any aspect of its biology.  Ironically, considering the level of knowledge for most Neotropical understory passerines, most of our knowledge of this species concerns its breeding ecology.  Only two nests have been described, however, and no studies have investigated its foraging or habitat requirements.  There is still no recorded song for this species.
