Introduction

Piura Chat-Tyrant is a small flycatcher endemic to northern Peru. Found only on the west slope of the Andes in northwest Peru, from Piura south to Ancash, it inhabits arid and semihumid brushy slopes and edge, between 1500 and 2800 meters in elevation. Piura Chat-Tyrant has broad geographic overlap with the more widespread White-browed Chat-Tyrant (Ochthoeca leucophrys), and both species are dull brown above with a gray face, a broad white supercilium, and whitish-gray underparts. Piura is distinguished from White-browed by its smaller size, richer tones to the brown upperparts, and rufous tips to the wing coverts. Due to habitat loss and fragmentation in its small range, the species has been classified as "Near Threatened" by the IUCN Red List.
