Breeding

Introduction

Most information on breeding of Plain Xenops is from Skutch (1969). The breeding season of Xenops in Costa Rica and Panama is from December to at least June. Plain Xenops pair up monogamously and have 1-2 broods of 2 eggs per year. Both mates will excavate a nest-hole 3-10 m up a decaying tree and line it with soft plant materials. They will also use cavities made by other species such as piculets. Both sexes participate in a 15-17 day period of incubation, as well as a nestling period of 13-14 days. More details on nesting behavior and success can be found in Skutch (1969).
