Demography and Populations
Introduction
Total population of Plain Xenops is estimated to number 5,000,000 – 50,000,000 individuals (BirdLife International 2013). Deforestation models predict that Plain Xenops will lose 15-16.3% of suitable habitat over 10 years, resulting in a population decline of up to 25% (Bird et al. 2012; BirdLife International).
Robinson (2001) analyzed long term effects of habitat isolation on avian species occupying Barro Colorado Island, Panama. Plain Xenops island populations increased 100% from 1970 to the mid-1990s.
Estimated densities (Remsen 2003, from Terborgh et al. 1990 and Thiollay 1994):
12-30 birds/km2 in transitional forests in southeastern Peru
8-13/km2 in terra firme forest in French Guiana
