Plain-capped Starthroat has a large geographic range and the population trend appears to be stable; consequently the IUCN Red List conservation status of this species is Least Concern. This species is included in Appendix II of CITES, as is the case with all hummingbirds, regardless of rarity (except for Hook-billed Hermit Glaucis dohrnii, which is Endangered and is on Appendix I of CITES). Plain-capped Starthroat is not considered to be threatened under Mexican law.
The relative abundance of Plain-capped Starthroat is assessed as fairly common to common in Mexico (Howell and Webb 1995), and uncommon to fairly common in Costa Rica (Stiles and Skutch 1989).
Effects of human activity on populations
Human activity probably has little short term effect on Plain-capped Starthroat; no threats are identified by BirdLife International (2013).
