Plumbeous Kite is listed by the IUCN as a species of Least Concern because it has an extremely large range, an apparently stable population, and a very large population (BirdLife International 2012).

Widespread habitat loss and deforestation will have a negative effect on Ictinia plumbea populations and avian numbers overall. However, Plumbeous Kite may adapt relatively well to human disturbances on a smaller scale. As Plumbeous Kites are commonly found along forest edges, habitat fragmentaiton may pose less of a threat to the species. Furthermore, as aggregations have been seen to take advantage of plowing in the fields as a mechanism for flushing insects out, plumbea will likely be better adapted to handle a shift towards agricultural land use.
