Distribution

Distribution in the Americas

The Prong-billed Barbet is resident in montane regions of Costa Rica and Panama. The northern distributional limit is in the Cordillera de Tilarán (Stiles and Skutch 1989), and it occurs south to Veraguas, Panama (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989). The elevational range is 750-2450 m (locally to 450 m) on the Caribbean slope in Costa Rica, but 1500-1450 m on the Pacific slope (Slud 1964, Stiles and Skutch 1989). In Panama, it primarily occurs at 1500-2250 m, but locally as low as 1050 m (Ridgely and Gwynne 1989).

Distribution outside the Americas

Endemic to Central America.

Habitat

The Prong-billed Barbet occupies montane evergreen forest, forest edge, and tall clearings where there are scattered trees. These forests are extremely humid, with many epiphytes and moss, and are prone to fog (Skutch 1944, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Short & Horne 2001).
