Diet and Foraging

Diet

The Prong-billed Barbet is primarily frugivorous (Skutch 1944, Stiles and Skutch 1989, Remsen et al. 1993). Wheelwright et al. (1984) listed 11 species of fruit on which they "commonly" or "uncommonly" observed Semnornis feeding, and an additional 19 species on which they "occasionally" observed Semnornis feeding. The fruits most commonly noted in the diet are Ocotea spp. (Lauraceae), Clusia alata (Clusiaceae), Cephaelis elata (Rubiaceae), Gonzalagunia rosea (Rubiaceae), Guettarda poasanas (Rubiaceae), Malvaviscus arboreus (Malvaceae), Miconia spp. (Melastomaceae), Rubus rosaefolia (Rosaceae), Lycianthes multiflora (Solanaceae), Witheringia coccoloboides (Solanaceae), Symplocos sp. (Symplocaceae), Clibadium spp. (Asteraceae), and Symplocarpon brenesii (Theaceae) (Wheelwright et al. 1984). Skutch (1944) also observed Prong-billed Barbets eating unidentified flowers.

Nestlings initially are fed insects (see Reproduction).
