Introduction

White-faced Ground-Sparrow is a rather oddly patterned, yet attractive, large sparrow. It has a white face, surrounded by a blackish forecrown, rusty crown, and a large blackish ear patch on the white face. Otherwise it is brownish gray above, with unstreaked, pale grayish to whitish underparts. This ground-sparrow occurs from southern Mexico south through Guatemala to western Honduras. As the English group name suggests, this sparrow forages on the ground, either as singles or pairs. It occupies deciduous forest and forest edge, the edges of humid montane forest, and second growth. Although White-faced Ground-Sparrow is fairly common, it often is retiring, and most aspects of its natural history are poorly known.
