Breeding

Introduction

Breeding of Purple-crowned Fairy in Costa Rica is from October through March, but sometimes until as late as July, especially on the Pacific slope (Stiles and Skutch 1989).

The nest is a cup, with an incurved rim; the nest structure often tapers below to a cone shape (Skutch 1961, Stiles and Skutch 1989). The nest is composed of plant down, and has little or no moss or lichen. Nests are placed 6-20 m above the ground, near the tip of a slender branch, and often are over a stream or near forest edge (Stiles and Skutch 1989). The clutch is two white, unmarked eggs (Skutch 1961). Incubation is 16-17 days, and is entirely by the female (as is typical of hummingbirds) (Schuchmann 1999). The nestling period is 20-24 days (Schuchmann 1999).
