Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

Purple-crowned Fairy usually is not very vocal (Howell and Webb 1995). A call is described as "a high, thin, slightly metallic sssit, which may be run into longer rapid series" (Howell and Webb 1995).

There are surprisingly few available audio recordings of vocalizations of Purple-crowned Fairy; additional audio recordings can be heard at Macaulay Library.

Nonvocal Sounds

None reported, other than the usual "whirring" or "humming" sound of the wings in flight, audible (as in most hummingbirds) at close range.
