In 2006, the American Ornithologists’ Union (AOU) merged the genera Saurothera and Hyentornis into the genus Coccyzus, following Sorenson and Payne (1995). This resulted in changes to the species names in each genera. Species’ names changed in the genus Saurothera include the Hispaniolan Lizard-Cuckoo (Coccyzus longirostris), Great Lizard-Cuckoo (Coccyzus merlini), Jamaican Lizard-Cuckoo (Coccyzus vetula), and the Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo. The Chestnut-bellied Cuckoo (Coccyzus pluvialis) is the only species in the genus Hyentornis that was changed (Banks et al. 2006). Saurothera vieilloti remains a scientific name synonym for the Puerto Rican Lizard-Cuckoo. Coccyzus vieilloti is embedded in a clade with Coccyzus vetula, Coccyzus merlini, and Coccyzus longirostris; vetula is the basal taxon in this clade, while vieilloti is sister to the pair merlini + longirostris.

The species formerly also was called Vieilloti’s Ground Cuckoo, and was named by Charles Lucien Bonaparte in 1850 after ornithologist Louis Jean Pierre Vieilloti (Wetmore 1916).
