The genus Nesospingus traditionally has been classified as a member of the Thraupidae (e.g. Ridgway 1902, Hellmayr 1936, Storer 1970). Phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial DNA sequence data, however, indicate that this genus and Chlorospingus (bush-tanagers), Spindalis (spindalis) and Phaenicophilus (palm-tanagers) form a monophyletic clade that is sister to wood-warblers (Parulidae), and is not closely related to members of Thraupidae (Burns et al. 2003).
