Introduction
Although the Red-crested Cardinal is listed as common throughout its distribution (Parker et al. 1996), no detailed study has been done as to a comprehensive measure of its wild population size. These data would be important to determine if captures for the cage bird trade are negatively affecting wild populations. Additionally accurate observations regarding molting from juveniles to adults, life spans of adults in the wild, and sources of mortality and predation on Red-crested Cardinal are needed. Additional genetic studies could clarify their relationship to other members of the genus.
