Geographic Variation

Related Species

Described as Psittacara Erythrogenys (Lesson 1844); type locality Guayaquil.

There is no comprehensive phylogeny for Aratinga. Phylogenetic analysis of DNA sequence data, from both mitochondrial and nuclear genes, indicates that Aratinga is paraphyletic (e.g. Tavares et al. 2006, Schirtzinger et al. 2012), but to date no study has included more than a handful of members of the genus.
