Priorities for Future Research
Introduction
While more information exists on the Resplendent Quetzal than on many other Neotropical birds, there still are notable gaps in knowledge. The greatest such gap is for demographic and population information. The population estimate given by BirdLife International is in need of updating. Furthermore, while we believe the species to be in decline we do not know the rate of the decline. Additionally, since we believe habitat loss to be the greatest threat to the species, more research needs to be done on the rate of habitat loss and the impact on the species. We also need to improve our understanding of other sources of mortality, such as the very low levels of nest success.
