Introduction

Rufous-bellied Nighthawk is a large, dark nightjar of Andean cloud forests. It is long-winged and short-tailed, with a white throat, tawny belly, and all-dark wings and tail. The mournful song of the nighthawk is given in flight and superficially resembles the familiar descending series of Common Potoo (Nyctibius griseus) but is faster and burrier. This nighthawk usually is observed flying over the canopy at dawn and dusk, apparently foraging for insects. There is little published information, however, on the feeding or breeding behavior of Rufous-bellied Nighthawk.
