Systematics

Geographic Variation

No geographic variation is known. The species is rare in museum collections with reportedly only 21 specimens (study skins) available in four collections (Franke and Salinas 2001).

The above summary and detailed description of the identification of Russet-bellied Spinetail draws on the discussions in standard field guides: Fjeldså and Krabbe (1990), Ridgely and Tudor (1994), Remsen (2003) and Schulenberg et al. (2007).

Subspecies

Related Species

The Russet-bellied Spinetail is very distinctive with no obvious close taxonomic relatives (Remsen 2003). Some authors (e.g. Ridgely and Tudor 1994) have suggested that it merits placement in another genus. Its foraging behaviour and the nature of its vocalisations show some similarities to the Necklaced Spinetail (Synallaxis stictothorax) complex (Lloyd unpublished data, Schulenberg et al. 2007). The nest however, is similar to those of many other Synallaxis species (Franke and Salinas 2001, Remsen 2003).
