Sounds and Vocal Behavior

Vocalizations

The song of Rufous-crowned Antpitta is a 0.4-0.8 second-long whistle produced at 2.2-2.4 Khz, distinctly descending at the end and occasionally also in the beginning. This piercing keeee-yurh note is given at intervals of 1.3-1.6 seconds for up to several minutes (Krabbe and Schulenberg 2003, Restall et al. 2006).

The alarm call, given by both sexes, is a decelerating chatter of 9-28 notes lasting 1-3 seconds. Each note in the rattle spans a wide frequency range. Also reported is a loud, emphatic, sharp tche-tchik! (Ridgely and Greenfield 2001, Krabbe and Schulenberg 2003).

Additional audio recordings of vocalizations of Rufous-crowned Antpitta can be heard at Macaulay Library, at xeno-canto, and at Internet Bird Collection.

Nonvocal Sounds
