Introduction

Rufous Mourner is a medium-sized flycatcher that occurs in humid lowland forests from southern Mexico south to northwestern South America in western Colombia and Ecuador. This flycatcher is overall reddish brown with somewhat paler underparts, and with a pale-based black bill. Rufous Mourner is strikingly similar to the sympatric Rufous Piha (Lipaugus unirufus), but is much smaller, with a smaller bill. The mourner is visually inconspicuous within the forest, but is often heard giving its plaintive wolf-whistle call. Although Rufous Mourner is widespread, its natural history is rather poorly known.
