Diet and Foraging

Diet

The Rufous Piha forages in the canopy and central levels of humid forests and seldom descends to the floor. Among the items in its diet are insects (including caterpillars and "winged insects"), spiders, scorpions (occasionally), berries, hard green fruit (lauraceous?), small palm fruit (Skutch 1969, Stiles and Skutch 1989). Hatchlings are fed insects, spiders, small scorpions and fruit (Skutch 1969); see Reproduction.
