Introduction

The Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycatcher is of principally Amazonian and pre-Amazonian distribution, occurring north to eastern Colombia, south to northern Bolivia and southern Brazil, and east as far as Pará in east Amazonian Brazil. The species has been recorded to 1100 m. It is largely allopatric with the similarly-plumaged Smoky-fronted Tody-Flycatcher (Poecilotriccus fumifrons), but the two species meet along the Rio Araguaia in central Brazil, and perhaps elsewhere. Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycatcher has an obvious rufous wash over the lores and face, as well as the wingbars, facilitating its identification. The vocalizations of the two species are similar, although they are separable with care and some experience. In behavior and habitat preferences too, the two species are similar: they usually forage alone or in pairs, and rarely accompany mixed-species flocks. Nothing has been published to date concerning nesting ecology of the Rusty-fronted Tody-Flycatcher.
